After a five year break Sweden’s own Witchcraft are releasing Legend their
fourth studio album and first for Nuclear Blast. They are known by many to be
the band that brought back the production style and sound that made American
bands like Blue Cheer so unique in the late ’60s and helped to spearhead the
now very bright Swedish rock scene
Gone now are the lo-fi production replaced by the modern day production of a
band like The Sword yet it’s really hard to say that the band has really
skipped a beat with time apart and a slightly updated sound
Witchcraft is a much crisper sounding unit on album opener Deconstruction
which feels like yet another excellent ode to Virginia’s Pentagram. With a
galloping lead riff and Magnus Pelander still sounding as good as ever
vocally this track makes an excellent statement in a new direction for the
band. The guitar leads could very well be played by Victor Griffin as this
song is about as potent as any other song the band has ever written
Continuing the trend It’s Not Because Of You is a mid paced riff and vocal
driven track that also showcases Oscar Johansson on drums. This song’s focus
however is that of a powerful melody to back up Pelander effectively
doubling the musical beauty in fell swoop. The ending riff section also makes
for some face melting moments and summing up a great song all in all
On Ghosts House The vocals of Pelander are run through a psychedelic filter
to add more to this band that clearly cannot have more than enough things
going on at one time. Seeing as Pelander has completely given up his duties as
an axeman this must have given him more than enough time to sharpen his
skills
Legend does have a few bumps on its otherwise seamless road namely An
Alternative To Freedom and album closer Dead End the latter of which might
very well translate to an excellent live rendition. For what it’s worth
Legend is not quite a Witchcraft or a Firewood but it is most certainly a
welcome return of a band that has been away for far too long
